Translator's Note
On the midnight of 26 October 2024, the upload of the translation of the Chidambaram Sri Natesa Sahasranama Stotram - srI natarAjarAja divyasahasranAma dravida mahAbhAshyam (Author: BrahmashrI Ka. Mee. Rajaganesa Deekshitar, Chidambaram, foreword written by Chaturvedi Sri Ganesa Parameswara Deekshitar) onto Shobhanam commenced. The next day (27 October 2024) was aippasi pooram, and utsavams are held in both Kanchi and Chidambaram. It was on that very day that Jagadguru Sri Vidhushekhara Bharati Sannidhanam of the Sringeri Sharada Peetham visited the Kanchi Kamakshi Ambal Temple. By chance, I noticed that Swarna Venkatesha Deekshitar's son was offering the poorNakumBham welcome to the Saint. Upon the sight of the photograph, I exclaimed in absolute wonderment to my parents, sister, and husband, that we had met the son of Swarna Venkatesha Deekshitar at the residence of Chaturvedi Sri Parameswara Deekshitar post our wedding during the mArgazhi utsavam. It is our understanding that he was GPD ayyA's nephew, and he had come there with his dharmapatnI to seek blessings (it was possibly his birthday or his wedding anniversary). It was then that (as we write in our tribute) that ayyA kept his eyes locked onto mine as he blessed them reciting a verse from the aBhirAmi ammai pathigam, as my husband and I partook brahmaNa samArAdhanai food there. It was one more perfect miraculous gem of harmonious purity tied around the neck of ambA parAbhattArikA, that has come to be my life.

The above has been mentioned in 'Chidambara Rahasyam' a samskrita treatise part of the itihAsam 'Sivarahasyam'. There are countless such details contained in upanishads and purANAs.
There are several sahasranAmAs unto Chidambaram Sri Natarajarajar of indescribable glory. Among those, the sahasranAmA mentioned in the samskrita treatise AkASabhairava kalpam, that is both stOtrarUpa and mantrarUpA is most significant, and has been a part of worship across several kalpAs.
In its pUrvapIThikA, it is mentioned that in the previous kalpA this sahasranAmA was given as upadEsam by parameswara to Vishnu who then became the protector of the worlds, and that in this kalpA the sahasranAmA is narrated by parameswara to His consort ambikA. In its uttarapIThikA, the glory and benefits of this sahasranAmA, its regulations, prayOgAs, yantrAs, pUjA, those who have benefited from this anushThAnA etc have been mentioned. I am summarizing as the details contained therein are endless. There is a kArikA for this nAmasahasram authored by a mahAn SrinAthar who is considered an avatArA of srimannArAyaNA. It is by aid of this kArikA that the thousand names of srInatarAjArAjA have been compiled. This stOtrA of immeasurable power and glory contains neither expletive particles such as cha, api, ata etc nor tautological words.
It is noteworthy that these thousand names of Sri Natararaja who is sakaLA (manifest; with parts) and nishkaLA (unmanifest; without parts) contain masculine, feminine, neuter and avyaya nAmAs (indeclinables). These sahasranAmAs of natarAjarAjA can be individually converted into / considered as feminine and used to worship Ambal. This manner of sammELanA worship of the Sri Natarajaraja-Sri Sivakamasundari Ambal has been in practise since ancient times at Chidambaram.
There is an expansive and divine commentary on this sahasranAmA in samskritam titled 'chintAmaNi', which also contains cognitions on the Sri Lalitha Sahasranamam as well.
It was my gurunAthar AchAryavaryA BrahmashrI Ka. Mee. Rajaganesa Deekshitar who composed, without any expectations and solely as a spiritual offering, this dravida mahAbhAshyam / Tamil commentary that is easily comprehensible to the learned and the unlearned, and is full with bhAvA in its precious summation. It further celebrates the expertise in samskrita and affinity to Tamil that my gurunAthar was endowed with.
Our praise is unto Sri Angirasa venkatesa Sarma who is dedicating this special edition unto the holy feet of Sri Sivakamasundari Ambal sametha Sri Natarajarajar.

A Note on the Author of the Sri Natesa Sahasranama Dravida Mahabhashyam

In Sri Chidambara mahAkshEtram that is the BhUlOka kailAsA, AkASasthalA, and the AnandathAnDava kshEtrA, Brahmasri. Ka. Mee. Rajaganesa Deekshitar was born as the eldest son to Brahmasri Meenakshisundara Deekshitar and SrImati Sivakamasundari Ammal. By the paramAnandAnugrahA of AchAryAL, he learnt Vedas and Shastras from BrahmaSrI Raghava Shastrigal and mantrashAstrAs from BrahmaSrI Subramanya Deekshitar of his own clan. He was a paramaBhAgyavAn who performed SrI nateswarArAdhanam uninterruptedly for 80 years.
He was the pradhAna AchAryAL at the 1955 manmatha aani mahAkumbhAbhishEkam and at the 1972 SrI Sivakamasundari kumbhAbhishEkam. As sarvasAdhakA, he has presided over and performed several kumbhAbhishEkams.
He has authored a mahAbhAshyam in Tamil on the samskrita text SrI kunchitAnghristavam by SrI santAnAchAryavarya umApati sivam. He has also authored scholarly summative commentaries in Tamil on SrI shAstA 1000, 300, suprabhAtam etc.
He was in constant contemplation of the holy feet of SrI Natesamurthi. During the arDhayAma kAla SrI Chidambara Natesa mahAbhishEka puNyakAlam in Purattasi of raktAkshi year, he received the abhishEka prasAdam. Upon the completion of the arDhayAma kAlam, without any palpable trouble, he attained the divyakunchitacharaNAravindam of SrI Natesamurthi.
As a testament to the truth that he had complete and unshakeable faith in the Natesa sahasranAmam, his prANA attained SrI Natesa divyakunchitacharaNam right at the moment his sishyA SrI vaidhyanAtha Sivan recited the line 'kailAsavAsI kAmESa: kavi: kapatavarjita:' from this sacred sahasranAmam.
He dedicated his entire life to the service of ambalatthAduvAn SrI Natarajarajar and was of the staunch principle that he neither knew nor revered more no other deity, kshEtram, nor theertham.

SrISiva: - The padA 'srI' has several meanings, a few among those being vEdam, lakshmI, saraswathi, buddhi, aisvaryam, tripurasundarI. siva: means parabrahmam, mangaLam, light, nishkaLaswarUpam, mOksham, balanced in all aspects, binary tendency, omnipresence, among others. Therefore, the Lord along with srI, the Lord along with ambikA, the Lord along with all there is is srInatarAjarAjar. There are several more meanings for this nAmA that are beyond the scope of this text. Since this nAmA starts with 'srI', those who chant this will have their wishes granted. It is comprehended that the blessings of the Almighty also accrues.
SrISivAnAtha: - One who is with the auspicious ambikA, the consort of ambikA.
SrImAn - One who is adorned with sampat such as aNimA etc. One who is the most pleasing in appearance. One who has lakshmI on his chest when he is of the form of vishNu who is the protector of the worlds. One who is adorned with vibhUthi.
SrIpatipUjita: - One who is worshipped by Lord VishNu who is the consort of lakshmI.
Sivamkara: - sivam is an avyaya word that means gold. One who has gold in his hand. One who has the golden meru as his bow. One who grants all wants in this lifetime and ultimately mOkshA to those who behold his form, those who chant his mantrA and those who chant this stOtrA.
Sivathara: - One who is verily auspicious, One who grants auspiciousness.
SiShtahrShta: - One who is benevolent towards those in the dhArmic path.
SivAgama: - One who has been attained by parvatarAjakumAri gowrI through tapas. One who makes his devotees attain mOkshA. One who brought foxes under the guise of horses in order to protect maNivAchakar. One who reached the gowri shikhara in the himAlayAs in order to test the tapas of ambikA who was meditating on the shivashabdham.
Thus, the mahimA of paramEswarA is explained briefly, followed by an explanation on his swarUpam.
akhaNdAnandachitrUpa: - One of the blessed form who grants the highest bliss. One who is the jnAna vatavan (dhakshiNAmUrti seated under the vata vrksham).
paramAnandathANDava: - One who is of the form of the dancer who creates the highest bliss.
This is the foremost among the 108 forms of the divine dances. It is the first nishkaLa svarUpam. It is the reason behind the five functions of God, designed by Divine Grace for the deliverance of the souls, viz., ciruṭṭi, titi, caṅkāram, tirōpavam, aṉukkirakam. Therefore the special padA 'parama' is included. One who adores the several dances mentioned by dhanDu muni. One who has taken the form of a dancer in order to bestow bliss on ambikai and/or yOgIs.
apasmrtinyastapAta: - apasmrti is a disease. A person afflicted by this disease does not retain his sanity, and it is said that others must not see him. That disease took on a form and arose from the ApichAra hOmakundam of the dhArukAvana munIs and tried to attack paramEswarA. The One (paramEswarA) stomped on its back with his right foot.
krttivAsA: - One who wears the skin of the narasimham. krtti is the skin of creature. The purANAs say that paramEswarA wears the skins of elephant, tiger, lion etc. Since it has been mentioned in subsequent nAmAs that he is adorned with the skins of elephant, tiger etc, it is taken here to indicate the skin of lion.
krupAkara: - One who blesses the adiyArs. One who is the abode of grace. One who eradicated the sins of
the seven chiranjeevIs including krupar.
kALeevAdapriya: - One who indulges in contest against kALI. One who is affectionate towards adiyArs who chant 'kALI, kALI'.
kAla: - One who is of the trikAla form, past, present and future. One who is of all forms and one who performs all functions.
kAlAtheetha: - One who is beyond time, One who is beyond yamA.
kalAdara: - One who wears the chandrakalA. One who wears 64 kalAs.
kAlanEthA - One who directs trikAlA or yamA.
kAlahantA: - One who has killed yamA. kAlasamhAramUrti.
kAlachakrapravartaka: - One who directs and sustains kalpam, yugam, varsham, ayanam, rtu, month, paksham, vaaram, tithi, nakshatram, yOgam, karaNam, muhUrtham, nAzhigai, mAtrai, lavam etc.
kAlagna: - One who knows the aforementioned kAlAs.
kAmada: - One who grants wishes; One who has given kAmA as a son unto mahAvishNu.
kAntha: - One who is beauteous. One who has blessed Lord Brahma to be near him.
kAmAri: - One who is the enemy of manmathA (One who has burnt manmathA).
kAmapAlaka: - One who has resurrected kAmA.
kalyANamUrti: - One who is of auspicious form. One who is of Golden form. One who has taken form for the sake of marrying Devi. kALidAsA has explained this in dEvIstutI.
kalyANIramaNa: - One who plays with ambikai.
kamalEkshaNa: - One who has lotus eyes, One who is of the form of vishNu.
kAlakaNTa: - One who has a dark neck like kALamEgham (dark cloud).
kAlakAla: - One who is yamA unto yamA.
kAlakUtavishAchana: - One who consumed the kAlakUta poison that emerged from the churning of the Ocean of Milk by the dEvAsurAs in order to obtain amrtam.
krtajna: One who knows his deeds, One who knows the deeds of creatures.
krtisArajna: - One who knows the greatness of deeds.
krSAnu: - One who is the knower, One who is of agni rUpA.
krshNa pingaLa: - One who is of a blue-gold form.
karicharmAmbaradara: - One who wears elephant skin as clothing (gajasamhAramUrti)
kapAlee - The mUrti with the amrtapAtram in his hand. One who has plucked and wears Lord brahmA's skull (kapAlee, bhairavamUrti).
kalushApa: - One who eradicates the pApA of creatures (ajnAnA). One who has vanquished mahAvishNu's matsya rUpA (matsyAri mUrti).
kapAlamAlABharaNa: - One who wears brahma kapAlAs as a garland. chidambaram srI natarAjA has a garland of 32 brahma kapAlAs.
kangALa: - One who has taken the form of kangALaBhairavA in order to vanquish vAmanA; vAmana nigraha mUrti, chattainAthar. (kangALam thOL mElE kAdhalitthAn kANEDi is a thiruvAchakam verse).
kalinAshana: - One who removes pApA. One who at the end of kaliyugam, through mahAvishNu of kalki form annihilates wrongdoers.
kailAsavAsee - One who sits atop Mount Kailash. One who has the brahmarandhrA as abode. One who is permanently sanctified within the sphatika lingam. It is due to this fact that sphatika linga poojai takes place in the chidambara sabhai.
kAmEsa: - One who is the consort of ShivakAmEshvari who adorns the SrIchakrabindu peeTham. One who is the IshvarA of all the BhOgavastUs (brahma-vishNu rUpan).
kavi: - One who has composed all kAvyAs. One who is of the form of vAlmIki.
kapatavarjita: - One who is not duplicitous in thought and deed (One who is harmonious in both thought and action). It is duplicitousness to hide one padArthA and evince another.
kamanIya: - One who is beauteous; One who is of a captivating appearance.
kalAnAthashEkhara: - One who wears the moon on his head.
kampukantara: - One who has a conch-like neck.
kandarpakOtisadhrusa: - One who is akin to a crore manmathAs.
kapardhee - One who has matted locks of hair, termed kapardam.
kamalAnana: - One who has a lotus-like face.
karApjaDHrutakAlAgni: - One who carries fire in his lotus-like palm. That fire is the apocalyptic mahAgni.
kadambakusumAruNa: - One who is of a slightly reddish form like the kadamba flower.
kamaneeyanijAnanda mudrAnchita karAmbuja: - One who has a beautiful arm that shows the mudrA of Ananda thAnDavam. (The left bottom hand of paramEswarA - 'dOlahastham).
sphuraddamaru nidhvAna nirjitAm bOdhi niswana: - One who has limited the roar of the oceans through the sound of the udukkai (hand-drum) held in his top right palm. Through the fourteen sUtrAs starting from a, ee, uN etc. He who has rejected limitless wrong words; One who has blessed forth the samskrita grammar).
uddhanDathANDava: - (Now, shivathANDava bhEdAs are mentioned). One who dances, standing high as a pole. One who holds a club (parikkOl) in his hand as he dances.
chaNDa: - One who dances with extreme fury; One who is of the form of chaNDA.
UrdhvathANDava panDita: - One who swings a leg high and dances. This form is seen in chidambaram and thiruvAlangAdu. One who is skilled in dancing in the AkASA without touching the earth.
savyathANDava sampanna: - One who is skilled in dancing UrdhvathAnDavam and AnandathANdavam left to right and vice versa. In UrdhvathANDavam the right foot is raised, and in AnandathANDavam the left foot is raised. After both these dances were performed at chidambaram, UrdhvathAnDavam with left foot raised was perfomed in thiruvAlangAdu, and Anandanatanam was performed with right foot raised in madurai.
mahAthANDavaBhairava: - One who is glorious through his great dance before the kalpa-praLayA / the apocalypse.
brahmANDakANDa vispOta mahA praLaya thANDava: - One who dances alone during the mahAsamhArakAlA during which all the universes created by Lord brahmA are annihilated.
mahOgrathANDavAbigna: - mahOgran indicates a rudrA or powerful wind. One who knows the dances of mahOgran and powerful wind. One who is surrounded by mahOgrAs who understand the intricacies of thANDavam.
pariBhramaNa thANDava: - One who dances rotating in all four directions.
nandinAtyapriya: - One who adores the dance of nandi accompanied by several percussion instruments.
nandI: - One who always bestows bliss on the world through his dance. One who is joyous. One who is of the form of nandi.
natEsa: - This nAmA is significant for the aBhimAnadEvatA of this stuti. Even if this nAmA is chanted just once it is enough to eradicate pApam. natan refers to BharatA and his shishyAs. It is also said that their niyAmakan is eeshA. Since the word natan refers to Bharatan, we who are in his kaNdam are all BhAratAs. Our upAsyamUrti is also natEsA. Therefore it is the purport that all BhAratiyAs surrender unto natESA.
natavESabrt - One who wears the guise of a dancer.
kALikAnAtyaraSika: - One who has agreed to dance with kALi 'kALarAtri' during the sarvasamhArakAlA.
nisAnatana nischala: - One who's midnight dance renders the world motionless. One who has won over kALi who is motionless beholding his dance.
Bhrungi nAtya pramANagna: - One who knows the expanse of the BhrungimunI's dance.
BhramarAyitanAtyakrt - One who dances like swirling bees. One whose dance produces the sound of buzzing bees.
viyadAdi jagatsraShtA - One who has created worlds and AkAsA etc.
viviDhAnandaDhAyaka: - One who grants the pleasures obtained through srak-chandana-vanitAdi bhOgAs. One who grants, as per qualification, manushya-gandharva-dEva AnandA as mentioned in the upanishads.
vikArarahita: - One who is unchanging; One who is unblemished by at any time due to any sambandhA.
vishNu: - One who is omnipresent. One who is of the form of mahAvishNu.
virAteesa: - One who is magnificent; One who is the IshvarA to BrahmA. One who is the king of birds. One who has birds for his vAhanAs.
virANmaya: - One who is of the form of the world.
virAt-hridaya padmasta: - One who is in the heart lotus of the earth, in the chidambara saBhA. One who resides in the syEna sayanam homakundam. One who resides in the chest of mahAvishNu who has the garudA as vAhanA.
vidhi: - One who is of the form of BrahmA. One who is the form of the meaning of the pratyayAs 'ling, lEt, lOt' mentioned in the vEdAs.
vishvADhika: - One who is beyond the confines of the world.
viBhu: - One who along with the forms of hari, hara, durgA, vinAyakA and skandA, is worshipped and is benevolent at several places. One who is the IshvarA to all. One who takes forms during times that necessitate the re-establishment of dharmA.
vIraBhadra: - One who has taken the form of vIraBhadrA to destroy the yagnA of dakshA. One who blesses heaven unto the kshatriyAs.
visAlAksha: - One who has long, wide eyes. One who is the consort of visAlAkshI, as visvanAthA.
vishNubANa: - One who has mahAvishNu as arrow while annihilating tripurAsurAs. This sthalA is tiruvathikai, one among the ashtavIratta sthalams, where shivA is veerattEswarar. There is a sthalam 'saranArAyaNa perumAL' near it.
This incident is also mentioned in the vEdAs. 'One who has become an arrow' ('ambadhuvAnavanE') is a verse part of a thirumangaiyAzhvAr composition.
visAmpati: - One who is the leader of the third varNA.
vidhyAniDhi: - One who is the repository of the eighteen viDhyAs.
virUpAksha: - One who has the third eye on his forehead. The presiding deity of hampI. virUpAksha-sthalamUrthy.
viSvayOni: - One who is the cause behind the origin of the world. One who has viSvan - VishNu as yOni/AvudaiyAr to his sakaLa nishkaLa form / lingam.
vrshadvaja: - One who has a rishabha flag.
virUpa: - One who is formless. One who is of bird form.
viSvadhikvyApI - One who has completely occupied the world and the directions (dik).
vItaSOka: - One who completely lacks sadness.
virOchana: - One who is magnificent.
vyOmakESa: - One who has the AkASA for his matted locks.
vyOmamUrti: - One who is of the form of AkASA. One who has chidambaram, the AkASA-sthalA as his divine body.
vyOmAkAra: - One who has created the AkASA. One who is the five-faced sadASiva rUpA, One who is Space himself.
avyayAkruti: - One who is of an immortal form.
vyAGhrapAdapriya: - One who is affectionate towards the tiger-footed munI vyAGhrapAdA. This munI's name is mentioned in the vEdAs. His history can be seen in kOyirpurANam, saBhApati vilAsam (thillaittirunatanam).
vyAGhrasarmadhrut - One who skinned the tiger that emerged from the ApichAra yagnakundam of DhArukAvana rishIs, and wears that skin as his robe.
vyADhinAsana: - One who eradicates diseases. One who has taken the form of siddhAs such as Dhanvantri.
vyAkrta: - One who performs all activities everywhere. One who has a form and a name.
vyAprta: - One who has vyApArA (vyApArA = action).
vyApI - One who is omnipresent.
vyApyasAkshI - One who knows from the inside.
viSArada: - One who is a poet.
vyAmOhanAsana: - One who removes the aBhimAnam in ajnAnam and sarIram etc, while eradicating the disease termed as mUrchA / syncope.
vyAsa: - One who has compiled all arts including the vEdAs. This compilation is described in the samskrita commentary 'chintAmaNi'. He is of the form of vyAsamuni.
vyAKhyAmudrAlasatkara: - One who holds the chinmudrA. One who teaches in silence. DakshiNAmUrthi.
varada: - One who grants boons to his adiyArs.
vAmana: - One who is worshipped by mumukshUs. One who is of a minute form. One who is of the form of vAmanA who incarnated in order to bring under control the arrogance of mahAbali.
vanDhya: - One who is worshipped by all.
varishta: - One who is above and beyond everything.
vajravarmaBhrt - One who wears a diamond kavachA. One who carries the weapon vajrA and wears a cloak / cape.
vEdavEdya: - One who is to be known through vEdAs.
vEdarUpa: - One who is of the form of vEdAs.
vEdavEdAntavittama: - One who knoes the vEdAs and the upanishads.
vEdArThavit - One who knows the purport of the vEdAs.
vEdayOni: - One who is the abode of the vEdAs.
vEdAnga: - One who has vEdAs as his body parts.
vEdasamstuta: - One who is worshipped by the vEdAs.
vaikunThavallaBha: - One who has mahAvishNu as his consort (as mentioned expansively in the kandapurANA).
avarshya: - One who is of the form of vastUs that occur without rain. One who is of the form of the sea.
vaiSvAnaravilOchana: - One who is fire-eyed. One who emerged in a nine-inch ratnA form from the AhavanIya agnikunDam used by brahmA in his yagnA at the antarvEdi kshEtram. One who is ratnasaBhApati mUrthi. This legend is part of chidambaram purANam and chidambara rahasyam. This mUrti is worshipped in chidambaram during the madhyAna kAlam.
samasThaBhuvanavyApI - One who pervades all worlds.
samrDDhi: - One who has immeasurable aishvaryam (wealth).
satadOdida: - One who appears frequently. One who is permanently present.
sUkshmATsUkshmadara: - One who is minuter than the minute atom termed as pArimandalyam (size of param aNu).
sUrya: - One who is of the sUrya rUpA.
sUkshmasthUlatvavarjita: - One who is neither tiny nor gigantic.
janhukanyAdara: - One who wears the daughter of janhu munI, gangA, on his head.
janmajarA mrityunivAraka: - One who removes birth, senility, and death.
sUrEsana: - One who has armies of dEvAs.
SuBhAkAra: - One who is of an auspicious form. One who is of yOgic forms with respective names of the yOgAs such as vishkambam.
SuBhramUrthi: - One who is of a white form.
Suchismita: - One who is of a white smile. One whose smile sparks agnI. One who has a white, benevolent smile to protect his BhaktAs. One who has a fire-like smile while annihilating the tripurAsurAs.
anarGharatnaKhachitakirIta: - One who wears a crown studded with valuable ratnAs.
nikatEsThitah: - One who is near adiyArs. One who has his temple near holy rivers.
suDhArUpa: - One who is of the form of amritA (nectar that bestows immortality).
